A Bound Heart

Image
A Bound Heart Laura Frantz Revell Though Magnus MacLeish and Lark MacDougall grew up on the same castle grounds, Magnus is now laird of the great house and the Isle of Kerrera. Lark is but the keeper of his bees and the woman he is hoping will provide a tincture that might help his ailing wife conceive and bear him an heir. But when his wife dies suddenly, Magnus and Lark find themselves caught up in a whirlwind of accusations, expelled from their beloved island, and sold as indentured servants across the Atlantic. Yet even when all hope seems dashed against the rocky coastline of the Virginia colony, it may be that in this New World the two of them could make a new beginning--together. Laura Frantz's prose sparkles with authenticity and deep feeling as she digs into her own family history to share this breathless tale of love, exile, and courage in Colonial America.      I was drawn to this book because the heroine is an apiarist--and, as any one who knows me ca

Enclave

Image
Enclave Thomas Locke Revell It's been 50 years since the Great Crash and what was once America is now a collection of enclaves, governed on the local level and only loosely tied together by the farce of a federal government. Catawba, one of the largest and most affluent enclaves in the southern states, is relatively stable and maintains a successful business of trade with nearby enclaves, including the one at Charlotte Township. But when a new vein of gold is found beneath the feet of those in Catawba, it's only a matter of time before trouble finds them. Now the future of Catawba may be in the hands of an untried 21-year-old trader named Caleb. And Caleb knows that if his secret were ever to come out, he would never see another dawn. DNF      I think a lot of people will enjoy this book, because it's a post-apocalyptic type of novel, but also with a sort of X-men element that will garner interest from people like...well, like me. The thing is, even wit

Falling For You

Image
Falling For You Becky Wade Bethany House Publishers Willow Bradford is content taking a break from modeling to run her family's inn until she comes face-to-face with NFL quarterback Corbin Stewart, the man who broke her heart--and wants to win her back. When a decades-old missing-persons case brings them together, they're forced to decide whether they can risk falling for one another all over again. I told myself I was giving up reviewing contemporary fiction because I never enjoy it and then I feel mean writing a review. But...then I saw the blurb for the first book in this series, True to You . Guys, it's about a genealogist . Who works/lives in a historical village . And loves period dramas . Obviously this girl was my book twin, right? So I immediately put in on my to-read list but never got around to it. Eventually, Falling For You became available for review, and I chose it, figuring it would give me the needed push to go out and actually buy the first

Sons of Blackbird Mountain

Image
Sons of Blackbird Mountain Joanne Bischof Thomas Nelson When Aven Norgaard leaves Norway to serve as housekeeper to her late husband’s cousins in Appalachia, she expects lads in need of care, not three grown men—each in need of a wife and bound by a powerful brotherhood. As the men carve out a living by brewing artisan liquor, young Haakon’s pursuit tempts Aven’s lonely spirit . . . but it is his deaf brother, Thor, whose silent strength shows her the depths of real love. Unable to speak to any woman, Thor Norgaard never anticipates Aven will befriend him, let alone treat him as her safe harbor. Though hard cider is their livelihood and his greatest talent, he fights his way to sobriety with Haakon’s help, defying the bottle for Aven’s hand—only to face a battle of the heart that tests even the strongest bonds of brotherhood. I was introduced to Joanne Bischof's novels through  The Lady and the Lionheart . While the writing style wasn't always to my preferen

The Girl's Guide to Conquering Life

Image
The Girl's Guide to Conquering Life Erica & Jonathon Catherman Revell      Okay, first off, I don't think that I'm really the target audience for this book--which is something that I didn't know from looking at the cover and reading the blurb. I assumed that it was going to be more of an "adulting" handbook for women in the twenty-ish age bracket, but it's really much more juvenile. The how-tos are incredibly basic and the small handful of sections that I thought might be useful for me personally didn't give me much help; I think I'd get a better idea of how to change a car tire from youtube or my dad, for instance. Maybe my parents just prepared me very well for the world, but I can't imagine not knowing a lot of stuff in here. I can see this book maybe being useful to a girl with a single dad who can't really teach her how to shave her legs, shop for a bra, etc., but a lot of the skills it tries to teach are learned more by

The Wounded Shadow

Image
The Wounded Shadow Patrick W. Carr Bethany House Publishers The kings and queens of the northern continent lay siege to the Darkwater Forest, desperate to contain its evil. But rumors of gold and aurium have lured deserters and the desperate into its shadow, creating a growing army held in its sway. Desperate after the death and dissolution of their greatest ally, Willet and the Vigil seek the truth of what lies at the heart of the evil they face. They delve the mind of an old enemy and find an answer far worse than they could have imagined. Danger stalks the cities of the north, striking at the rulers of the kingdoms. As Willet and the rest of the Vigil seek to find answers, the group is scattered with an ever-growing darkness around them. Will they discover a path to keep their land safe, or will an ancient evil reclaim the world it once called its own?      I wish I could write a better review for this book, but the fact remains that I had a lot of trouble remembe

Sibley Birds of Land, Sea, and Sky

Image
Sibley Birds of Land, Sea, and Sky David Allen Sibley Clarkson Potter Today I'm reviewing something a little different- a set of bird-themed postcards illustrated by David Allen Sibley. The postcards come in a well-made, sturdy case and are divided into 5 sections: Waterfowl, Woodpeckers, Wading Birds, Songbirds, and Owls & Raptors. My favorites were the songbirds, but I also really liked some of the woodpeckers and owls. The postcards also look very well made (they are nice and thick) and the illustrations are very pretty, with good quality printing. Overall, this is such a lovely batch of postcards! I've been wanting to start doing more letter writing (I recently bought a wax seal to motivate me) and I think this will be a great addition to my newly started stationary collection. I received this product from bloggingforbooks.com in exchange for my honest review.

A Light on the Hill

Image
A Light on the Hill Connilyn Cossette Bethany House After being branded during the battle of Jericho, Moriyah has had no prospects for marriage--until now. She hopes to please the man, but things go horribly wrong and she is forced to flee for her life. Seeking safety at one of the Levitical cities of refuge, she is unprepared for the dangers she faces, and the enemies--and allies--she encounters on her way.      Yikes . I have no idea what to say about this book. Part of that might have to do with the fact that the blurb didn't really give me a good idea of what the story was about. In one way that was good, because everything was a surprise. On the other hand, I was expecting most of the story to take place in the city of refuge, but almost the whole novel is about the journey getting there . I'm not usually a fan of "travel" novels, so I admit I felt a little disappointed when I realized this. Also, Moriyah's journey involved using a lot of decep
